I’ve been on a long and determined search for reducing plastic as a whole but one of my biggest problems has been plastic sports bottles and bidons, using them all the time for supporting my hydrating needs across triathlon training and competition. However upon discovering Keego bottles that changed to being able to use a metal bottle that weighed just as much as a plastic one and was squeezable too – not compromising performance and benefiting health!
I’ve been trying both their sizes coming in at small (500ml) and large (750ml), tending to train with the 750ml bottles and racing with the 500ml ones, most recently at the European Triathlon Champs in Austria and XTERRA World Champs, where I took 3rd. They’re great for racing too and using them at two high quality international competitions both road and off-road this month showed that.

The Technology behind the Bottles and Why They’re Different to the Rest
The bottles features a pure titanium inner, combined with plastic on the outer shell to allow for a squeezable bottle. Whilst this bottle still contains plastic this is only on the outside and allows for elastic properties. The mouthpiece is food grade silicone which isn’t derived from petroleum like most plastic meaning harmful substances aren’t released when you drink out the bottle.
This is what I’ve been looking for – a bottle that doesn’t compromise performance or health but also provides more refreshing taste! It allows for much fresher and cleaner tasting drinking whilst exercising which is much more enjoyable than the warm plastic taste you get, especially in hot summer riding and activity.
Cleaning is simple too with the mouthpiece being replaceable and popping out the cap. For cleaning the bottle don’t use a brush or similar but filling with just water or adding some washing liquid and shaking gives you a clean bottle, cleaned simply.
Being metal, it means mold doesn’t build up too like plastic bottles in which it does so quickly, becoming a recurring problem for me before having to replace them so regularly.
Price
The bottles are expensive compared to normal ones – £33/£39 as per 500/750ml – and they even state that and explain why on Keego’s website, but you are getting a much higher quality product that is healthier, tastes better and lasts much longer, so I can understand the price and why.
I’d be replacing bottles more regularly due to mold and for me I’m trying to reduce the microplastics entering my body because I’m aware of how things happen and their potential health affects, so for me purchasing something for my health is an investment and why I try to find cleaner alternatives for health and our planet, reducing our plastic consumption and use.
Below I’ve screenshotted their explanation on the FAQ section at the bottom of their pages.

Pros

- Doesn’t release harmful plastic substances – microplastic free
- Reduces chemical and microplastic consumption
- Fresh and pure taste (helped by the titanium)
- Squeezable
- Light (72g – 500ml / 86g – 750ml)
- Easy to Clean
- Hygienic
- Long lasting
- Customisable and two good sizes
- Stops Mould build up
- Made in Europe (Germany)
General
- More expensive but a fair and justified price
- You can get a Fidlock option too for those who want a more secure fit or use the system already
Cons
- The bottle isn’t completely plastic free (outer shell) however this is the best and closest anyone has come to reducing plastic completely in sports bottles which are mass produced and discarded, so it is more sustainable and healthier, but maybe with technology advancements so rapidly they will be able to work out a completely plastic free way which I’m not sure is possible or how, but cannot criticise as where the water goes is only metal and the plastic is to allow for no performance compromise.
Verdict
I’ve loved using these bottles, found them easily compatible to train and race with and the drinks I put in them taste so much fresher too! I feel happier knowing I’m drinking with something that’s microplastic free – dramatically reducing my plastic consumption and intake of harmful chemicals whilst being able to use and squeeze it easily, being light too like standard plastic bottles, so am not compromising performance at all.
This is probably the most revolutionary product I’ve used and feel it should be more known in the sporting world and highly recommend it to anyone, helping not just our health but being more sustainable and helping the planet too!
