This month’s post comes a couple days before my next race, the Worcester Aquathlon, in British Triathlon Super Series where I’m going to be racing 3 aquathlons of various distances on Sunday. I raced at Mallory Park last weekend for the Euro qualifiers getting Top10 Youth A but racing back-to-back(-to-back) this weekend should be exciting. Apart from my main ‘A’ race at Mallory I managed to get a mountain bike (xc) race in and a season opener on the track.
After a hour of hot racing through the woods at Bedgebury, being at the front of the race pretty much the whole way round, I managed to take the win albeit a few centimetres on the line, on the twisty circuit, but a win nonetheless, which was fun to mix up training and racing with some off-road racing again.
I managed to get a PB in my season opener for 1500 at Worthing Track Night in 4.13.7, 3 seconds quicker than last year’s PB. It was a pretty slow first lap so was more 1100m of full on effort and I was hoping to get closer to 4.10 but it was a PB and so sets a good benchmark for the next one.
Onto Mallory where I raced 3 times – (heats, finals, relay) …… On the Saturday evening, I had a great swim for where I am at the moment, a lot quicker than PA’s in March, and felt strong on the bike and run. I qualified 10th for the A final out of 40 (athletes in the A final) getting in, in a decent position for getting onto the start in the water. Late Saturday evening didn’t help sleep being kept up till later, by music from a nearby field playing till midnight, since I was camping at Mallory but at least I was there in the morning so didn’t have to go far.
On the Sunday morning in the finals after a rough swim for me, I came out towards the back but time-wise behind other athletes in a pretty good place. I got in a group on the bike where there was no point attacking to the next just ahead, purely because I didn’t have any gears left and I didn’t want to just get sat off at the front and have dead legs for the run. After a good bike with a couple turns on the front, I had a smooth transition and started the two lap, 2km run course trying to gain some places. With several dead turns, tiring my legs even more, I picked off some athletes to finish with the 2nd quickest run of the day, 9th Youth A across the line and 20th overall. It was good to follow up the previous Super Series at Llanelli with some consistency finishing with the same position so it should give me some decent ranking points towards the series overall.
